Exhibition of Paul Jovanovic, House of Jevrem Grujić

November 2017 – March 2018

 

Pavle “Paja” Jovanovic was one of the most talented Serbian painters who painted more than 1,100 works. Some of his famous paintings are worldwide known: The Wounded Montenegrin (1882), Decorating of the Bride (1886) and Migration of the Serbs (1896). 

 

Paja was also the premier portraitist of Europe after 1905. It is interesting that he painted the Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria over 14 times, which was very unusual in that time. Beside royalty, he painted major industrialists, scientists, bankers …

Many European and international museums carry his works, signed under various names including: Paul Joanowitch, Paul Joanowits, Paul Ivanovitch, Paul Joanovitch, Paul Joanovitsch, P. Joanowitsch and others.

 

Exhibition in the House of Jevrem Grujić depict Paja as a loyal family friend and all his portraits from the House of Jevrem Grujić collection were gifts to the family members, signed with warm and unusual letters: From Uncle Paja (Od čika Paje).

 

Exhibition present 45 pieces of Paul Jovanovic artworks from various periods of his life and work.
